Let your students have a great time “texting” while they read. This method allows your students to carefully consider what they are reading and relate to new information that sparks questions while they are reading. Coding the text (or “texting”) is an effective way to keep a reader’s attention focused on understanding.
Print out bookmarks for your students and give them post-it note flags to mark their story in their reading books/stories. After modeling the method to your students, have them try coding their text and then let your students discuss their finds. Sharing what they learned while reading helps students increase their comprehension.
The “Text the Code” bookmarks and posters each have two levels: intermediate and middle school. Fiction and Non-fiction bookmarks and posters for both levels are in the download. All bookmarks are also available in color versions and black and white versions.
